Tvärminne Zoological Station (together with Lammi Biological Station and Kilpisjärvi Biological Station) belongs to the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki. It is a marine station located at the entrance to the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea. It serves as a centre for a large variety of high quality biological research, carries out environmental monitoring, and offers facilities for field courses, symposia and seminars, also in non-biological disciplines.
The Station also belongs to a broader network of Finnish University research stations which is spread across the entire country..
The station was established in 1902 and thus provides good background data for studying long-term environmental change. In addition, it is situated in a nature reserve, where only research and teaching activities are allowed. TZS is open all year round and we welcome visiting scientist, Finnish as well as foreign, to conduct their research at the TZS.
Information about publications, research projects and the species found in the area around TZS can be found under the Tvärminne Research Gateway.
Welcome to Tvärminne!
